What are Breakthrough Ad regions?
Breakthrough ad regions provide full-width ad spaces on article pages.
How to enable Breakthrough Ad regions
Breakthrough Ad regions can be enabled within the Page Customizations > Article Layout > Article breakthrough regions.
Once enabled, the change will affect the article presentation for that URL and any inherited URLs. There will be up to three full-width regions that stretch across the article and the right rail on desktop. They are spaced apart far enough for at least a 300x600 ad to appear in the rail on desktop, and the number of regions that are created is based on the total article length.
- In the desktop a breakout region is added to the page after every 2000 characters.
- In the tablet viewport a breakout region is added to the page after every 1164 characters.
- In the mobile viewport a breakout region is added to the page after every 776 characters.
In the right-rail, only the global-side-primary/secondary/tertiary regions from the section fronts will inherit, so you may need to adjust your rail items as needed so that the important items and ads automatically inherit to the article pages. Additionally, the ad regions within the breakthrough regions are automatically created using your Google Ad Manager settings. These regions can hold up to an 970 ad unit based on viewport size.
In addition to the ad units, in each breakthrough region, a utility region is also added so that you can place your own blocks as desired.
