Short Term Goals
Objective
In the next version release of the NOW APP, there are updates to the workflow for how the e-Edition is handled in the app as well as adjustments to the paywall workflow to include Access Control awareness.
According to Apple Policies, we are unable to mention, show or offer subscriptions in the app unless we are using In-App purchase infrastructure through Apple and Google.
We can honor subscriptions previously purchased through your site
“3.1.3(a) “Reader” Apps: Apps may allow a user to access previously purchased content or content subscriptions (specifically: magazines, newspapers, books, audio, music, and video). Reader apps may offer account creation for free tiers, and account management functionality for existing customers.”

Current Workflow
Paywall is enabled on a customers website first and then enabled in in the app settings.
Paywall honors web metering.
Access Control metering and targeting are currently not considered in this process.
The e-Edition was offered as a link in the app and forced users to a browser to interact with the content. This allowed all subscription information and the ability for users to sign up for a subscription to be available.
Workflow in next version of the app
In the 4.7 update, we have removed the rules that force the e-Edition into a browser so it can remain in the app.
By doing this, we are able to control what is visible for the e-Edition and bypass the subscription page to meet Apple’s guidelines.
If the paywall is enabled in the app, a login screen is offered when a user clicks on the e-Edition. If a user has a web subscription, then they will gain access to the Edition.
If the paywall is enabled and the user does not have a web subscription, they will not be able to gain access to the e-Edition.
If paywall is not enabled, the e-Edition is free for all app users.
We have also added the ability for Access Control to be considered in the paywall login screen for smart metering in the app.
Benefits
Users will now be interacting with app content and not directed out of the app to view this content. This is good for tracking user sessions and keeping the user engaged within the app.
e-Edition links will no longer have to be dropped during a submission process
RED: Paywall not functional in app, all content is free.
GREEN: Paywall is not functional in the app, all content is free.
BLUE: Paywall is functional in the app. Content availability is dependent on user subscription through the website.
Future
As we move towards In-App Purchase in April, this workflow will be updated.
When in-app purchase is implemented for IOS and Android applications, when a user logs in, if they do not have a web subscription, they will be offered an In-App Purchase option through Apple or Google. TownNews will provide documentation on the set-up as we get closer to releasing In-App Purchase.
Audience+ customers will be able to control a variety of metering options for their apps within Access Control. Subscription Pro customers that wish to use a paywall in the app will be set to 10 free views.
