What is IDFA used for?
The Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA) is a random device identifier assigned by Apple to a user's device. Advertisers use this to track data so they can deliver customized advertising. The IDFA is used for tracking and identifying a user (without revealing personal information). It is like a tracking ID in a mobile phone instead of a browser cookie.
Does Analytics use IDFA?
When used with Google Analytics, Google Analytics will automatically log some FCM-related conversion events. Attribution for these events requires IDFA access. When used with Google Analytics, Remote Config does not allow automatically-created user properties for targeting without IDFA access.
Does IDFA update impact Firebase?
Is IDFA personal data?
Each IDFA contains no personal identifying information, or PII, instead serving to measure and identify user interactions with ad campaigns, installs, and in-app activity.
Will this negatively impact my ad campaigns?
The update means that users have the choice to expressly give consent to track them and many anticipate that a significant number of users will opt out. In the absence of this information, paid advertising stands to suffer significant disruption, although the exact impact of the update will only become known after the rollout.
Are there additional set-up requirements in Google Ad Manager (GAM) for implementation?
If you are a TownNews IQ Ad Ops Google Ad Manager 360 customer, this will be completed for you.
If you are not a TownNews IQ Ad Ops customer, you will need to claim your apps in your instance of Google Ad Manager. These steps can be found in the Step 4 section, located here.

Request App Tracking Transparency authorization
Every app must get the user’s permission to track them or access their device’s advertising identifier (IDFA) through the AppTrackingTransparency (ATT) framework, which appears as a pop-up.
If permission is not granted by the user through the ATT pop-up, the user will appear as anonymous and be identified as 00000000-0000-0000-0000–000000000000.
Recommended Videos is also impacted by the IDFA update
If you utilize this feature in your app, there will be additional messaging if a user has signed in but denied tracking. This is a second opportunity for them to allow permission. If they click on the prompt where Recommended Videos would populate, the user will be directed to their settings to “allow tracking”.
