With the 1.3.0 version, we will allow customers to create notification topics based on user segments. User segments are buckets of users based on a particular user trait such as registered or subscribed. By being in one of these segments, the user can see the exclusive topics available and subscribe. Topics can only be inclusive of user segments. You can not limit topics to be all user segments except registered. You would need to think of who needs to have access to these topics rather than who does not.
Creating exclusive Notification Topics
You will see a new column called “User segments”. It will say “None” if a topic was created previously and the topic has not been modified since the recent AppMan update.
Click “New” or double click on an existing topic to get the topic settings. There is a new field to match the new column called “User segment”. We offer four different segments to choose from. You will need to select one of these.
If you selected any option except “All” you will need to turn off “Auto sign-up”. (This is very important for the feature to work properly)
Publish and make the live the profile changes
If new topics were created, go to Notifier and add these new topics to channels to be used. Once added these topics are treated like a normal notification topic. There are not any additional steps required.
Expected Result
- When a user opens their notification settings page either via the profile page or onboarding they will see all topics under the “All” (or “None”) user segment.
- If they are logged in they will see the “All” topics and the “Registered users” topics.
- If they are logged in and are a subscriber, either web or iAP, then they will see the “All” topics, the “Registered users” topics, and the “Subscribers” topics.
- If they are logged in and are not a subscriber then they will see the “All” topics, the “Registered users” topics, and the “Non-subscribers” topics.
If the user’s user status changes they will automatically be unsubscribed from topics belonging to user segments they no longer are a part of.
Usage Suggestions
- Use exclusive subscriber notifications as a perk for subscribing or registering for an account.
- It is recommended to add descriptions to your notification topics. These are displayed to users in the notification settings page, onboarding, and on the notification promotional blocks. It is a great way to tell subscribers what benefits they will get by signing up and can help denote exclusive channels.
- Implement the notification promotional block to showcase notification topics to readers while they are enjoying content
