BLOX VMS customers can broadcast a live stream via a mobile device to BLOX VMS’s live cloud if an app supports RTMP streaming. Follow these steps to use Larix Broadcaster on iOS or Android to start your broadcast.
Configuring the Live Stream Settings
Before you can stream with Larix, you first need to configure the app. There are a few steps to complete, as a one-time setup that can be saved in the app for re-use each time you want to stream.
First, launch the app on your device. On the video preview screen, click on the gear icon at top right to access the settings.
Next click on the plus sign at top right.
Fill out the fields as follows:
Name: This can be any descriptive term you would like, for identifying this connection on repeat uses (particularly if you save other connections to other platforms).
URL: Enter your BLOX VMS stream credentials in this pattern: rtmp://account1.ingest.field59.com/account/account1. If you are unsure what your account name is, please contact TownNews support.
Mode: Audio + Video (unless you specifically don’t want to broadcast audio).
Save to create the new connection in your Connections list. Back out of the settings to return to the video preview screen, and hit the red button to begin your live stream.
Adjusting capture and encoding settings
In the settings, you can adjust your live stream by clicking on “Capture and encoding”. This will direct you out of the app to specific settings on your phone (the screenshots below are for iOS devices) for video, audio, and more settings.
Some recommended settings:
- Start app with Camera: Back side
- Resolution: 1280×720 is ideal (and does not need to be exceeded). Minimum at least 640×360 is recommended.
- Orientation: Landscape
- Live rotation: Enabled (This allows you to turn the phone to vertical mode if you desire. The livestream will automatically adjust and pillar box in the BLOX VMS player).
- Bitrate: This will depend on the quality of your Internet connection. Assuming your mobile device has a dedicated connection such as a hotspot (not shared wifi), then minimum 1,000 Kbps is recommended. 2,000 Kbps (2 Mbps) is ideal in most low-movement events (press conferences, for example). For sports/lots of motion, consider 2,000-3,000 Kbps.
- Frame rate: 30 fps
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds
