What is an e-Edition Segmenting?
BLOX e-Edition pages support segmenting, the ability to add a clickable and linkable areas to e-Edition pages. Segments appear as light red colored regions. When readers interact with a region, they'll be presented with the linked editorial content. When viewing our Live e-Edition, linked content will appear alongside the e-Edition page right within the e-Edition viewer.
With this online content now associated with the segment, the Live e-Edition makes it possible for that online version of the content to be displayed alongside the printed page in the Live e-Edition user interface.
How to segment an e-Edition
To segment an e-Edition page, begin by opening up an e-Edition asset and then select an e-Edition page to segment.
Next, within the Segments tab, select +Add Segments. This will populate the Edit Map window.
Within the Edit Image Map window there are 5 options within the toolbar:
New segment: Use this option to create a new segment.
Add region: Regions can be used to add secondary regions to a segment.
Link to asset: Use this option to link to an editorial asset.
Lock: Use the lock option to prevent a segment from further edits.
Remove: The remove option is used to completely remove a previously-created segment.
To create a new segment, select +New segment. This will populate a red region box that can be sized to fit the content of an article.
The region box can be sized accordingly by grabbing the handles located in the corners of each box.
In the example below, the article "City mulls rental alert system" is enclosed within a segment.
The segment can be linked to the actual article asset by selecting the Link to asset option. This will populate the Find assets window where the asset can be located using the search filters.
Once added, the segment will feature a highlight, indicating to readers the clickable status. If more exotic segments are required, and a rectangular segment isn't suffice, the Add Region option can be used to capture other areas of the page.
In the example below, the article, "Bettendorf to revamp area" should be included within the segment, but doesn't fit in the original segment. This can be overcome by using the Add Region option to create another segment.
Once completed, this secondary segment will be linkable to the same asset as the primary segment.

What is a Live e-Edition cutout asset?
A cutout asset is an e-Edition specific asset that may be linked to a segment on the e-Edition page. The cutout asset itself simply defines the coordinates of the clickable area in the clickable image map of the Live e-Edition interface and associates it with the coordinates of that same section in a hi-resolution version of the same image.
When a cutout asset is created, any hyperlinks contained in the defined segment are extracted and made available to the end-user as related links to the cutout asset. This makes segments linked to cutout assets very useful for display ads that are contained in a page.
Cutout assets can also have assigned parent businesses from the BLOX Business Directory. This makes it possible to have business information info display directly with the cutout asset when the user clicks on the cutout in the Live e-Edition interface. A small view of the advertiser is displayed directly with the cutout asset and it links off to the advertiser’s business directory page.
The association of the embedded links, as well as the business directory association, can be automated using BLOX Total CMS.
