Output and Distributed Production Remote Users
In the "Phase I" model of Distributed Production, Remote users may output pages in the following ways:
- Mount a remote volume via VPN and output using the same Output Preferences as the Local or Normal users.
- Use a specific output preference that generates an output-ready PDF for Page Tracker at the final workflow process. The prepress/production staff could then to go Page Tracker and download the completed PDF and send it on its merry way to the press.
- Use a specific output preference to generate an output-ready PDF on the Remote workstation. Then use e-mail or FTP to send the PDF where it is needed for the prepress/production staff to send it to the press.
- Since ads may not be available for the Remote users because of bandwidth or remote access, the prepress/production staff may need to open those pages, import the ads, and handle the output themselves. That is discussed here.
Multiple Options Will Likely be Used
It could very well be that different users will use different options at different times for different pages. Your users will need training on each method as well as guidelines on when each should be used.
Where are the Output Preferences for Remote users?
There is a Template Master function in the Development Mode menu that should be used to upload the output preferences file to Page Tracker. Once uploaded, it is then automatically available for all users; Remote, Local, and Normal will all use the version of the output preferences that have been uploaded. This upload is one of the requirements for the Distributed Production Preparedness test.
Future Options
The "Phase II" version of Distributed Production, due in 2024, will provide an option to automatically forward the PDF to the server/domain's Data Feeds folder after the page is approved.
For appliance-based sites, that provides a mountable share where the PDFs can be selected and sent to prepress.
Non-appliance sites can use a third-party, automated FTP client to download and advance the PDFs to prepress.
